Allowances and benefits for managers in not-for-profits
18 August 2024 at 12:23 am

These responses can be used to benchmark the salaries and incentives provided in your own organisation, so you know whether you’re positioned within this competitive employment market compared to your fellow not-for-profits.

Remuneration isn’t everything; although our data highlights that employees want to be fairly paid for their work, they also seek things like career progression and support to reduce burnout. The Salary Survey uncovers the sorts of other benefits that staff receive.

What allowances do managers in not-for-profits receive?
The responses received to this year’s Salary Survey show that across the sector, many managers receive allowances for products related to their work. For example, 29 per cent of Tier 2 Finance Managers/Treasurers receive a professional registration allowance. For Services Managers, car allowances, phone allowances and paid professional registrations are all equally commonly seen. Overall, phone allowances are common in many managerial roles.

Some roles also receive bonuses and incentives for their work. For example, six per cent of Marketing, Fundraising and Communications cases surveyed received bonuses and incentives, compared to two per cent of Operations/Administration Managers.

How the Salary Survey works
It’s important to remember, however, that not everyone receives allowances, bonuses and incentives. What works for one not-for-profit may not work for another – which is why the Salary Survey is so comprehensive in its composition.

The Pro Bono Australia Salary Survey – which is broken down by manager type including General, Communications, HR and Program, and then further by factors like business sector, operating budget and location – allows you to deep-dive into the data to identify the benchmark that most closely resembles your own organisation, so you can make the most accurate decisions on remuneration for your staff.
